Google Has a Favourite Page. Is It Yours?
In our study of 2.45 million AI answers, AI Overviews used the same top source on 98% of prompts. If that page names a competitor and not you, every week you wait is another week they get the mention.
- AI Mode kept its top source on 88% of prompts, so it moves around more than AI Overviews.
- ChatGPT managed 75% and Gemini 71%, so one engine's data tells you little about Google.
- AI Overviews showed no source page in 49 of 6,304 answers (0.8%), so there is almost always a page to go after.
- Sources: SourceSignal study of 14,420 prompts, 5 June to 12 September 2026, and five live SourceSignal projects, 27 May to 30 October 2026.
How It Works
One Answer Is Luck. Every Week Is a Pattern.
SourceSignal asks Google the same commercial questions on every refresh, in the country you choose, and keeps each AI Overview and AI Mode answer with the brands it names and the pages it uses. A search where no AI Overview appears tells you about Google, not about your brand, so read it as no answer rather than absence. You get a pattern you can defend in a report, not a screenshot you got lucky with.
Illustrative. One ChatGPT answer to “best crm for startups” on 15 Sep names Pipewise and Ledgerly, and not Northpeak. Across repeated samples over 13 weekly refreshes, 34% of answers name Northpeak. How often each brand is named: Pipewise 61%, Ledgerly 47%, Northpeak 34%, Cloudmere 18%.

Real Product
One Report. Every Engine. Google Included.
Real screens from a live project, not mock-ups. Filter to AI Overviews or AI Mode, see wins on the timeline and open any topic on its own.

Pick AI Overviews or AI Mode from the engine menu and the whole report follows. They are listed as separate engines because they behave differently.
How AI Overviews Actually Behaves
Google says AI Overviews only appear when its systems think they add something to classic Search, and may run several related searches across subtopics to build the answer (Google Search Central). So the first question is not where you rank. It is whether an Overview shows up at all and which pages it pulls in when it does.
Three things stand out in our data:
It locks onto one page. AI Overviews returned the same top source on 98% of prompts in our 100-day study. That makes the top source a stable, worthwhile target rather than a moving one.
It names a crowd. In all five live projects we checked, AI Overviews named more brands per answer than ChatGPT did on the same questions. Being on the list is the price of entry, not a win.
It links your site more often than ChatGPT. Only 32% of brand mentions in AI Overviews came without a link to the brand's own site, against 67% on ChatGPT. Your own pages pull more weight here.
And the uncomfortable bit for anyone still reporting on rankings: in a Pew Research Center study, people who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data, 900 US adults). If you are not in the answer, the click you are optimising for may never happen.
AI Mode Isn't AI Overviews. Track Both.
AI Mode is Google's conversational search, built for questions that need more reasoning, exploration or comparison. Google is clear that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show will vary (Google Search Central). Assume your AI Overviews data covers AI Mode and you will plan against the wrong pages.
Our data backs that up. AI Mode kept the same top source on 88% of prompts, ten points less often than AI Overviews, so it moves around more and one check proves little. It also mentioned brands without linking their site 38% of the time, against 32% in AI Overviews, which puts a little more weight on third-party pages.
One more Google quirk worth knowing: both surfaces show links back to Google's own results pages beside the real sources. In our study we set aside 2,202,346 of them, because a results page is not a source anyone can pitch. Read the actual pages, not the links back into Google.

Movement Over Time
Compare each refresh against the same questions, country and competitor set.
| What you see | What it may mean | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| No AI Overview for the question | Google did not think an Overview added enough here. | Record it as no answer. Check AI Mode for the same question before drawing conclusions. |
| Named in a long list, not recommended | Google recognises you but does not see you as the best fit. | Compare the wording around the brands it does recommend and the pages behind them. |
| Competitor named, third-party page used | A review, roundup or comparison page may be backing the competitor. | Open the page, check it is current and see whether you are missing or misdescribed. |
| Your page used, brand not named | Your content feeds the answer without getting you on the shortlist. | Make the page say plainly what you do, who for and why you fit the question. |
| Different picture in AI Mode | The two surfaces are leaning on different pages. | Treat them as two targets and prioritise the page that appears for both. |
Tracking to Action
Spotting the Gap Is Easy. Closing It Is the Job.
Any tracker can tell you Google left you out. SourceSignal checks the page Google used, grades it and drafts the pitch. You approve it. Nothing goes out without you, and no placement or future answer is promised.

FAQ
Before You Start Tracking Google.
Straight answers, no sales talk.
What Is an AI Overviews Tracker?
It asks Google the same commercial questions on a schedule and records whether an AI Overview appears, which brands it names and which pages it uses. Over time that shows whether your position in Google's answers is improving and which pages to act on.
Can SourceSignal Track My AI Overviews Ranking?
Not as one fixed position, because the answer can change between runs. SourceSignal tracks how often and how prominently you appear across a stable panel of buyer questions, which is the honest version of an AI Overviews rank tracker.
Does SourceSignal Track Google AI Mode as Well?
Yes. AI Mode is tracked as its own engine, separate from AI Overviews, because Google says the two can use different models and show different links. You choose which engines each project tracks.
Which Plans Include AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Every plan does. Each project picks its engines up to the plan's engine count, and AI Overviews and AI Mode count as two. The plan table above shows how many engines each plan allows.
What Happens When No AI Overview Appears?
Google only shows an Overview when it decides one adds value, so some questions get none. Treat that as no answer for that run rather than proof your brand is missing, and check AI Mode for the same question.
How Often Is the Data Refreshed?
Tracked questions refresh weekly on the Brand, Growth and Agency plans. Enterprise schedules are set per organisation.
Can I Choose the Country?
Yes. Each project checks its questions in one country, chosen from seven markets. Tracking is built and tested for English-language questions.
Will Getting Onto a Source Page Put Me in AI Overviews?
No tool can promise that. A source page Google keeps using is a sensible place to earn a mention, and SourceSignal keeps measuring afterwards, but any later movement is an association, not proof of cause.
