Resolve structural issues first
Read XML errors, then inspect invalid or duplicate locations and unexpected hostnames. Treat lastmod findings as syntax checks.
Download and investigate
Save the complete sitemap-inventory.csv. Verify important URLs, canonical choices and index status with separate evidence before submission.

A urlset contains page entries. A sitemapindex points to other sitemap files. The checker reports the root it parsed but does not follow the child files.

Two different limits
A valid protocol size can exceed this checker’s fetch limit.
The sitemap protocol allows up to 50,000 entries and 50 MB uncompressed in a file. This public tool retrieves at most 2 MiB of decoded content, so a file can be within protocol limits yet too large for this check. Inspect smaller child sitemaps where available.
Standalone gzip files without an HTTP Content-Encoding header are not supported. Supply an accessible XML response or a smaller XML child file. The checker does not unpack an arbitrary .gz download based on its filename.
After validation
Use the inventory to ask the next question.
A clean XML result does not prove that the listed pages return successful responses, allow crawling or match their canonical declarations. An index entry is a pointer to another document, not confirmation that the child document is healthy.
Review meaningful change dates rather than stamping every entry with the current day. The checker can identify invalid lastmod syntax, but only your publishing records can establish whether a date reflects a real content update. Cross-host entries similarly need an ownership and submission review.

Will it find my sitemap automatically?
Only the standard /sitemap.xml path is tried when you submit a bare origin. For another filename or a sitemap index, enter the exact public XML URL.
Does it fetch every URL listed?
No. It parses the fetched sitemap and validates entry fields. Page responses, canonical status, robots policy and search indexing are not tested for each location.
Does it follow a sitemap index?
No. It recognizes an index and lists its child sitemap entries. Submit a child sitemap URL in a separate run to inspect that file’s contents.
Why are only 50 entries visible?
The table is a preview. Download sitemap-inventory.csv for every parsed entry. The ordinary Export CSV control exports the displayed result table, so choose the inventory file for the full list.
Can I check a compressed sitemap?
A response decoded through HTTP Content-Encoding can be read within the fetch limit. A standalone .gz file served without that encoding header is unsupported; provide XML instead.
Does a valid sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. A sitemap helps describe the URLs you want discovered. Search engines still make their own crawling and indexing decisions, and this tool does not query those decisions.
Is this full XML Schema validation?
No. It performs bounded structural and field checks. Use the result to identify concrete problems, while retaining any protocol-specific validation required by your publishing workflow.
